3. St Cuthberts Cave, near Belford
St Cuthbert’s Cave is an overhanging outcrop of sandstone rock, supported by an isolated pillar of stone.
It is reputed that the monks of Lindisfarne brought St Cuthbert’s body to this place to rest for a short period in AD875 following Viking raids on the Island and the subsequent abandonment of the Saxon monastery. Photo: Jane Coltman
4. Halidon Hill, Berwick
Halidon Hill is a summit, just north-west of Berwick. At the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, Edward III of England used longbowmen on the heights of the hill to defeat the Scottish army led by Archibald the "Tyneman" Douglas, Regent of Scotland. On a fine day, the view south stretches towards Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands. Photo: Ian Smith
