Sadly, the driver of the Corsa – a 78-year-old man – was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the collision, but at this early stage, no other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, is now appealing for anybody who was travelling through Alnwick yesterday afternoon and saw a silver Corsa to get in touch.
“Any death on our road is a tragedy but it is particularly poignant given this time of year as we approach the festive period,” Sgt Roberts said.
“We want to get answers for the man’s family and are committed to determining the events that immediately preceded the collision.
