Council makes fresh parking bays request

Those living in Riverside and Chantry Place believe that a number of residents-only bays should be created because there are times when they are unable to park outside their homes and have to go to a public car park.

A ‘no waiting between 8am and 6pm’ single yellow line is currently in place and there is space for only a limited number of vehicles next to the properties.

The town council is supporting the residents and Coun David Clark believes that at least six bays can easily be created along the stretch of road.

He has written to Northumberland County Council and submitted photographs and diagrams to illustrate his points.

At a meeting of the town council’s planning and transport committee, Coun Clark said: “The county council set out the hurdles it believes would have to be overcome before bays can be installed in its response.

“But there are many current permit holders’ zones in the town centre that are much busier and more constricted than this area, so we do not accept this argument.

“Two vehicles can pass comfortably in the sections I have outlined for residents-only bays and installing them would free up valuable parking spaces by the leisure centre that are currently being used by some of the residents during the day.”

The committee agreed to ask the county council for a site visit from a senior county council highways officer.
